Volkswagen led the pack despite the emissions scandal, followed by Toyota, GM and Renault Nissan, according to industry data Sunday.
Volkswagen sold 10.31 million cars worldwide thanks to increased sales in China. Toyota lost the top spot for the first time in five years but sold 10.18 million cars, up 0.2 percent.
GM's sales grew 1.3 percent backed by brisk sales in China, selling 9.97 million cars. Renault Nissan, which acquired Mitsubishi in May last year, was close behind with 9.96 million cars.
Hyundai and Kia sold a total of 7.88 million cars, down 1.7 percent on-year and below 8 million units for the first time in three years amid falling sales at home and sluggish exports.
This year they aim to sell 8.25 million cars, their most ambitious target in history.
