[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Queen of Mystery Season 2" Episode 6

"Queen of Mystery Season 2" is finally settling into its investigative roots, and this time around we have minimal distractions. Those minimal distractions also come in the form of a certain wavy-haired weirdo haunting the police department's forensics lab, which adds a lovely new touch to the proceedings. Seol-ok and Wan-seung are carefully sorting through an increasingly confusing list of suspects, with Yoon Mi-joo's freedom on the line.

Episode six is perhaps the first episode to really feel like the good ol' "Queen of Mystery", as the plot progresses more smoothly now, and the creators are not attempting to juggle everything and everyone at once. We still have the side characters being their delightfully kooky selves, and we still have romance-centric scenes, but the process of our lovely duo investigating crimes in thrilling detail is back, and it is just as good as it used to be.

As apprehensive as I am about the new characters, I do get a real kick out of Hwang Jae-min (Kim Min-sang). He is antagonistic and petty, but he is also brutally honest and capable. Seol-ok (Choi Kang-hee) and Wan-seung (Kwon Sang-woo) have so many people around them who do not want them there, so any ally or positively responsing person is valuable. Episode six reveals more of Inspector Woo's (Park Byung-eun) imminent entry to the main story, and we get a little bit of everyone in a more calm, structured way.

What really excites me in terms of the main story is the possibility that the famously maybe-alive Hyun-soo (Hong Soo-hyun) may be more than one person, whether that includes the original Hyun-soo or not. Is Wan-seung's first love truly still alive? Or is someone using her name to strike fear into the heart of whoever she probably had dirt on? Could the drama be going for a major plot twist of it being Hee-yeon (Lee Da-hee)? She shows great interest in our duo, and she kept the ring she clearly received a secret.

Despite slightly panicking over the volume of the supporting cast members and guest stars here, I do highly enjoy this latest case. Mi-joo (Jo Woo-ri) carries the social commentary portion of it, and the entire topic of the spy cam criminal is very timely as well. More importantly, the investigation is structured in a more cohesive manner. We have a lot of suspects, and although my money is on the grandson, the possibilities are equally exciting.

Our newfound romance does feel a bit too much on the juvenile side at times, but it is no surprise when we consider the fact that neither Seol-ok or Wan-seung have dated past that one first husband and lover respectively. The entire process of the fumbling through their mutual attraction is simply adorable, and the equal footing they have in it is a breath of fresh air. See, Dramaland? Building solid bonds is where the magic is at.

"Queen of Mystery Season 2" is directed by Choi Yoon-seok-II and Yoo Yeong-eun-I, written by Lee Seong-min-II and features Choi Kang-hee, Kwon Sang-woo, Park Byung-eun and Kim Hyun-sook.
