[HanCinema's Drama Review] "The Ghost Detective" Episodes 23-24

"The Ghost Detective" has not been doing well on the pacing since it turned into a treasure hunt for Da-il's body, but it is Da-il's soul that is harder to capture. The group is struggling, Da-il is not listening to their input, and Hye is preparing traps our Team Good is just aching to fall into. With death seemingly almost inevitable for someone, who will that someone be? Can we end this without grand sacrifices?

Oh Da-il (Choi Daniel), I love you, but I wish someone would hit you right now. Yeo-wool (Park Eun-bin) has finally reached the precious realization that our beloved characters work well as a group, and can protect one another. She has understood why communication is important. This is such a breath of fresh air as a scene, but our titular hero is not receiving the message. Why not kill Hye (Lee Ji-ah) in her own body in the same way?

Chae-won (Lee Joo-young) has explained the rules, and all they need is someone like Yeo-wool to do it, with an object that can accomplish it. At this point, it feels odd that Da-il believes Yeo-wool's biggest possible trauma is taking down a deranged zombie with her own hands. The death Hye has inflicted, and Da-il's sacrifice would be far more damaging to our heroine than having to take a life and, once again, her opinion on this is not asked.

This is an odd moment where I wish Hye will get to his body before he does, because she is clearly more organized than Team Good, and would probably keep him alive long enough to see him suffer. At the same time, these delays and conflicts are getting repetitive and tiring. I appreciate how we slowly discover the extent of the special objects' power, and how the soul transferring is a central point again, but the dramatic conflicts need something fresh.

I wonder if this progress is where the other allies will come in handy. Whether Hye is killed in another body or her own, this case will not be buried. The authorities and the public know, as planned by Eun-chong (Yoo Su-bin) and someone on Baek's (Park Joo-hee) side. Is this just a set up for an ending where 'A Few Good Men' thrives as an agency, an origins story for another season, or just something to soon be tackled?

Assuming the idea is to spare both of our heroes, I wonder who else could be a sacrifice. We know Jeong-dae (Lee Jae-kyoon) would do it in a heartbeat, and Chae-won's medication troubles me. We never did find out why she is helping the group. Could she be seriously ill? If someone has to die, I just hope "The Ghost Detective" can make that sacrifice meaningful and necessary, rather than a product of noble idiocy or lack of communication.

"The Ghost Detective" is directed by Lee Jae-hoon-II, written by Han Ji-wan-I, and features Choi Daniel, Park Eun-bin, Lee Ji-ah and Kim Won-hae.
