According to Hwang Dong-hyuk, production for "Squid Game - Season 2" will start next year, and he's hopeful that if started next year, "Squid Game - Season 2" will not need to continue production into the year after that. Hwang Dong-hyuk estimated that "Squid Game - Season 2" is about two years away from release. At the moment he is writing the script. Hwang Dong-hyuk also stated that when "Squid Game - Season 2" is complete he'd like to get back to movies.

Hwang Dong-hyuk stated that originally he had wanted to do a new film project after "Squid Game" before starting the second season, but changed his mind when he realized that Lee Jung-jae and the other actors might age to much if he took a break that long. When asked about so many season one characters being dead, Hwang Dong-hyuk singled out Lee Yoo-mi and Jung Ho-yeon as having characters he wanted to work with more. He expressed disapointment in his letting them die so easily.

Hwang Dong-hyuk described the plot of "Squid Game - Season 2" with demurring, noting that the idea needs to take root in his mind first, much as "Squid Game" did, implying that this has yet to happen. Hwang Dong-hyuk claimed that the games themselves have already been designed, and that he's now working on how to incorporate them into the script. He refused to give any more details, stating that spoilers would ruin the fun.

Relative to the first season, the second season of "Squid Game" will also have a higher budget. Hwang Dong-hyuk claimed to have come to agreeable terms with Netfix as to the exact conditions for the increased financing. "Squid Game" was a major worldwide hit last year when it made its debut on Netflix back in September.
