In Han So-hee's apology, she mentioned being aware of her parents' generally untrustworthy nature. According to Han So-hee, she was actually raised by her maternal grandmother, her parents being a constantly unreliable presence in her life, saddling her with debts in adulthood. Such context gives new interpretation to previous discussions of Han So-hee's Cinderella story, working in a bar to make ends meet. According to Han So-hee her parents divorced when she was four years old.

Han So-hee explained that she did not bring this issue up sooner because she saw little purpose in publically defaming her parents, not imagining they would attempt to trade on her fame for money. An online commenters claiming to be a classmate of Han So-hee confirmed her story, mentioning her grandmother and her grandmother's friends coming to her graduation but not her parents. In spite of this, the commenter claimed that Han So-hee appeared to be quite happy.
