[HanCinema's News] Kim Yong-ji Talks About "Doom Doom"

September 15th saw the release of "Doom Doom" in South Korean theaters. The art house film premiered at the Busan International Film Festival last year. It was reviewed by Panos Kotzathanasis of HanCinema here. Recently, lead actress Kim Yong-ji of the movie discussed her role in it. There she plays I-na, a DJ who had to quit her job to work at a cell center after having a child.

This is her first lead role, Kim Yong-ji having had smaller roles in such television dramas as "WATCHER" fro 2019 and "Tale of the Nine Tailed" from last year. Kim Yong-ji claims to have enjoyed the time spent closely with director Jung Won-hee in pre-production, her not having this kind of access in her smaller television drama roles. Kim Yong-ji also mentioned having to set of DJing equipment at her home so that she could better get used to it, the DJing elements being critical to her character.

Kim Yong-ji claimed to be so deep in DJing thinking she couldn't even properly enjoy her own pre-release party in Hongdae. Many professional DJs were in attendance running their own plalists, and Kim Yong-ji was nervous she might mess this up- though she smiled recalling the anecdote. While Kim Yong-ji's own DJ experience is abstract, it's far more pivotal to her character and especially her conflict.

The character of Kim Yong-ji's mother is played by Yoon Yoo-sun, and is a devout Catholic who's disappointed in her daughter's failure to lead a normal life. Kim Yong-ji said the three of them met around ten times in rehearsel to work on the exact expressions of their difficult relationshp that needed to focus on realism. Kim Yong-ji noted that much of this nuance as achieved non-verbally.

Throughout production, Kim Yong-ji was mindful of how the story of "Doom Doom" was a women's story that could happen to just about anyone. Kim Yong-ji closed by noting the importance of finding a process in life by which to go to the next step. For Kim Yong-ji's own next step, she is slated to appear in "Somebody" on Netflix later this year and "Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938" on tvN next year.
