[HanCinema's News] "Man of Men" Comedy Genre Film in South Korean Market

Following the success of movies like "Extreme Job" and "Exit - Movie" the South Korean box office has seen a sudden shift to genre comedies. "Man of Men" is the latest film to follow up on this trend, banking on its lively characters and premise to find success at the box office.

Marketing for "Man of Men" has largely focused on the chemistry between its lead actors, Sol Kyung-gu and Cho Jin-woong. Both are older men, both have widely different personalities, and they are united for very different reasons to score a big payout as part of a scheme involving life insurance.

"Man of Men" is facing an uphill battle in terms of box office success. Neither of its stars are particularly bankable and it's opening up against a major Hollywood film as well as local romantic comedy "Crazy Romance", which has more well-known stars. However, many comedies this year have been able to reach mild milestones thanks to hitting a sweet spot with a particular audience.

"Cheer Up Mister Lee", for example, has been able able to score over a million admissions over its theatrical run in spite of weak distribution in the face of strong competition. And in any event, even a weak box office performance can still work out in the long run if positive publicity carries over into the secondary markets.
