[HanCinema's News] "Peninsula" Breaks 350,000 Viewers in First Day at South Korean Box Office

According to figures released by the Korean Film Council, "Peninsula", the long-awaited follow-up to "Train to Busan" broke 350,000 admissions in its first day of availability at the South Korean box office. The strong performance considerably outpaced that of fellow zombie flick "#ALIVE" which had first day admissions of 200,000 three weeks prior.

The opening returns of "Peninsula" are also encouraging because, unlike "#ALIVE", they managed to break the 275,000 admission record set by "The Man Standing Next" earlier this year. Other mainstream releases prior to the COVID-19 outbreak tended to open around the 100,000 admission numbers, to ultimately successful if modest runs over the million viewer range.

"Peninsula" has much larger ambitions than that, and is currently in the midst of an aggressive marketing campaign. This coupled with special summer reopening discounts suggest that "Peninsula" may score admissions as high as 2.5 million viewers in its opening weekend. And this is all before the movie, which cost 15 million dollars to make, starts screening in foreign markets.

However, the long-term future of "Peninsula" is more difficult to gauge. User ratings of the movie have been mixed- although this was also the case for its predecessor, "Train to Busan". Of more definite concern are the upcoming releases of "Steel Rain 2: The Summit" and "Deliver Us From Evil" in a few weeks, both of which are similarly high-powered blockbusters. But until then, "Peninsula" has the box office all to itself.
