[HanCinema's News] Second Quarter South Korean Film Sales up 20% From Last Year

The second quarter of 2019 has been a significant improvement over 2018 for the domestic South Korean box office. From the period of April to June, 2019 saw a 20% increase in viewers, from 45.1% in 2018 to 54% in 2019.

The improvement can be traced largely to the top three performing films in either period. The third and fourth Avengers films led in both years, but the 2019 Avengers film had 2.7 million tickets over its predecessor. The niche local movie "Parasite" at 9.6 million tickets easily defeated 2018's number two, the second Jurassic World movie. By third place, the 2018 box office was already into niche movies like "Believer" at 5 million. The Aladdin remake had 8.3 million tickets.

Box office since the third quarter has so far been fairly strong compared to 2018 as well, mostly thanks to the latest Spider-Man movie. 2019 will most likely also outperform 2018 in the third quarter as well, unless upcoming major releases like "The King's Letters", "The Divine Fury", and "Exit - Movie" fail to make an impact compared to last year's "Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days".
